Background

Born on June 10, 1973, to Angel and Maria Rivera, Rey had recently relocated from California to Baltimore with his wife, Allison, to work for his longtime friend, Porter Stansberry, as a writer and videographer for Stansberry’s investment company. ​

The Disappearance

The couple was living in Baltimore for more than a year. The couple has moved to Baltimore a year ago form Los Angeles after Rey got a job in a local firm, it was reported they planning to settle back in California.

On the morning of May 16, 2006, Alison Rivera was out on a business meeting while Rey was at home. On the evening of May 16, 2006, Rey abruptly left his North Baltimore home after receiving a phone call. Later that day after several failed attempts to contact Rey, Alison contacted Claudia, her co-worker and friend who was staying at their home.

Claudia told Alison that Rey is not at home and around 6 in the evening Rey suddenly left the residence just after receiving a call, Claudia recalled that she heard Rey saying “oh“ on the phone call. The next morning at 5am Claudia called Alison to inform her that Rey has still not returned. Alison’s parents and members of Rey’s family gathered at Rey’s Baltimore residence in a mutual effort to find him.

The Final Hours: Rey Rivera’s Last Known Movements

The phone call that Rey last received was traced to the switchboard of Agora Publishing, the parent company of Stansberry’s firm where Rey was earlier employed. The search continued for more than a week until Rey’s car was found parked in a parking garage near his work place which was adjacent to the Belvedere Hotel.

Discovery of the Body

After days of searching, Rey’s car was found in a parking lot near his workplace with a parking ticket which indicated that the car was parked on 16th of May 2006, the day Rey Rivera disappeared. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a hole in the roof of a conference room adjacent to the Belvedere Hotel. Inside, authorities found Rey’s partially decomposed body, suggesting he had fallen from a considerable height. ​

The autopsy revealed multiple rib fractures and fractures in legs even his left feimur bone has broken out of his leg, as the body was in later stages of decomposition the cause of death was declared unknown by coroner’s office where as Baltimore Police Department ruled Rey’s death as a probable suicide. However, several aspects of the case have fueled alternative theories.

Among these theories the access to roof top was questioned at first. While the roof of the Belvedere Hotel was somehow accessible, questions remain that how Rey landed on the roof of conference room (where Rey’s body was found) which was at a considerable distance from the main building.

Another theory was that Rey jumped from the 11th floor of Belvedere Hotel. Both of these theories supported, the police theory of suicide. A contradicting fact were Rey’s cell phone and glasses which were found on the roof of conference room, both items were in good condition without any indication of a free fall from such height.

One of Rey’s flipflop with a broken strap was also found on the conference room’s roof, indicating as if he was dragged. Whereas no CCTV footage of Rey entering the Belvedere building or trying access the roof top were found. 

According to Alison Rivera none of Rey’s personal belongings other than a cash clip were missing, Which Rey used to keep in his wallet. A few months after Rey’s death his wife found a mysterious note taped behind his computer table, the cryptic note contained Freemasonry quotations, several movie titles and names of prominent public figures.
