Mysterious disappearance of Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam’s Disappearance Dark Legacy of the Cecil Hotel

The world was enthralled by Elisa Lam’s tragic death and her unexplained disappearance in 2013 from Cecil Hotel. Her tale, coupled with the scandal surrounding the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, soon became the focus of numerous documentaries, online conjectures, and extensive media attention. What started out as a missing person case turned into a very unnerving story with spooky video, unsolved mysteries, and the eerie history of one of the most infamous hotels in Los Angeles.

Who Was Elisa Lam?

An easy going 21 year old Elisa Lam, who was originally from Vancouver Canada, was studying at the University of British Colombia. Elisa, who was described as bright, inquisitive, and reflective, had also openly discussed her battles with mental health issues, such as depression and bipolar disorder, on her Tumblr blog, “nouvelle-nouveau.” Her blog, which frequently discussed relationships, fashion, life, and her emotional struggles, gave the impression of a young woman looking for adventure, connection, and meaning of life.
Elisa set out on a solo journey around the U.S. West Coast at the beginning of 2013. San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco were among the places on her itinerary. During her travels, she maintained regular communication with her family, so her abrupt silence in late January was especially concerning.

Arrival at the Cecil Hotel

In an attempt to appeal to a younger, more cost-conscious clientele, the Cecil was rebranding at the time and had divided off a portion of the hotel under the new name, “Stay on Main.” Elisa arrived at the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on January 26, 2013. After allegedly acting strangely, Elisa was transferred to a private room after initially sharing a room with other female travelers.
But the Cecil Hotel was no ordinary tourist accommodation. Its past is filled with death, crime, and tragedy. The Cecil had been the scene of multiple murders, suicides, and strange incidents since it opened in 1927. Serial killers Jack Unterweger and Richard Ramirez (the “Night Stalker”) were among the notable residents. The hotel had developed into a sanctuary over the years. But over the years, Cecil hotel had transformed into a haven for the downtrodden, located in a part of the Los Angeles known for its homeless population and drug use—Skid Row.

The Disappearance

Elisa Lam was supposed to check out and continue her trip to Santa Cruz on January 31, 2013, but she was last seen on that day. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) started an investigation after her family in Vancouver contacted them, the family members were concerned as they were unable to contact her. Throughout the city, flyers featuring her picture were displayed, and her case soon came under media attention.
Investigators from the LAPD searched the hotel, even using dogs and combed every part of Cecil hotel including the rooftop, but Elisa Lam was nowhere to be found. There was not major breakthrough in the case until a gruesome discovery two weeks later.

The Elevator Footage

In the second week of February 2013, the LAPD released the infamous “elevator footage”, supposedly the last time Elisa Lam was seen alive on January 31. The roughly four-minute video, which went viral almost instantly, is regarded as one of the case’s most unsettling and perplexing aspects.

Elisa seems to be acting strangely in the video. She goes into the elevator and pushes a few buttons. She appears to be hiding as she enters and exits and peeps down the corridor. She occasionally makes odd hand gestures and seems to be speaking to someone, but the video showed no one other than Elisa Lam. The clip’s eerie quality is enhanced by the elevator door remaining open for an abnormally long period of time.

Every frame was examined by internet detectives, who came up with a myriad of theories: was she being followed? Did she use drugs? Are you having a crisis with your mental health? A paranormal activity? Or was there a darker motive at work?

The Grim Discovery

Hotel visitors started complaining about low water pressure, odd-tasting water, and discolored liquid coming from their taps on February 19, 2013. The hotel’s roof-mounted water tanks were inspected by maintenance staff. They were horrified to find Elisa Lam’s naked body floating in one of the roof top water tanks.

Nearby her body, her cloths were floating in the same tank, these were the same cloths Elisa was seen wearing in the elevator video. It was unclear how Elisa had gotten to the tank because of its heavy lid. Although access was provided by the fire escape, the doors and stairwells leading to the roof were intended to be locked and alarmed. The other disturbing mystery was, how and why the body was without cloths.

Autopsy and Official Explanation

According to a June 2013 report from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, Elisa’s bipolar disorder was a major contributing factor that lead to her accidental drowning and subsequent death. Other than her prescribed medication, she had no alcohol or drugs in her system.
Many questions remained in spite of the official ruling:

  • How did she get to the roof? Did someone assist her if the access points were secured? Were the doors not locked by hotel staff?
    • Why didn’t the dogs discover her sooner? How could her body have been overlooked during the search if it was already in the tank?
    • Why did she act that way in the elevator? Was it an episode of psychosis or something else?

Theories and Speculation

Theories ranging from the believable to the paranormal were all over the internet:
1. Mental Health Crisis: The most plausible explanation is that Elisa’s bipolar disorder caused her to have a manic or psychotic episode, which caused her to behave erratically and ultimately climb into the tank by herself.
2. Foul Play: According to some, she was attacked or followed, and her death was staged to appear unintentional. However, no evidence of assault or struggle was found.
3. Paranormal Theories: Many people hypothesized that Elisa was harmed by a supernatural force or ghost in the Cecil because of the hotel’s gory past.
4. Conspiracy and Coincidences: Some drew attention to uncanny similarities, like the 2005 movie “Dark Water,”

The Cecil Hotel’s Legacy

Darkness has long been known to be drawn to the Cecil Hotel. Situated close to Skid Row, it turned into a location where people went to vanish, whether on purpose or by accident. It has been connected to at least 16 fatalities over the years, including homicides, suicides, and mysterious events.
The property has now been redeveloped and rebranded in recent years. As part of a collaboration between the city and a private developer, the hotel reopened in 2021 as an affordable housing complex after temporarily closing in 2017 for renovations. Its legacy is difficult to overcome, though.

Elisa Lam’s death and disappearance continue to rank among the most unsettling incidents of the twenty-first century. The case holds a profound human tragedy at its heart—a young woman battling her mental health, alone in a city that can be both beautiful and cruel.
